DIY! Do it yourself. My absolute favourite Sunday pass time is DIY'ing. Why? I love to DIY because well its a blast, but mainly because I love to know exactly what ingredients are in my skin care products, and that they are safe to use. Take a look at the back of your body wash bottle, and scan down the ingredients. Yep, fragrance/parfum. Fragrance is the #1 cause of skin allergies, eczema, and even Central Nervous System damage. Fragrance is what makes your skin care products, well fragrant! I'm not writing this blog post to diss your skin care products,
I'm just providing important information that I had no idea about 2 years ago. The amazing pro of DIY'ing is that you make the products, you add the ingredients, and you know exactly what is being put in and on your body. The challenging part about ditching the fragrance and swapping in DIY or fragrance free products, is finding products that work as well, and smell as amazing. That is where DIY fits in so well. DIY gives you the ability to personalize the smell, and benefits of the product. Below I am going to give you 5 incredible DIY recipes that I personally have used to swap fragrance for fragrance free.
**You may change the essential oils I have used to change the scent! (i.e. use peppermint instead of grapefruit etc.)
**I use Doterra Essential Oils, and due to their purity they may dissolve plastics. I recommend making these DIY's in glass bottles to prevent this. A simple inexpensive hack is to use mason jars, or old glass Perrier bottles and purchase spray bottle caps from the dollar store!
Grapefruit Sugar Scrub
15 drops of grapefruit essential oil
1 cup of coconut oil
1/2 cup of white granulated sugar
Grapefruit zest (optional)
*Melt the coconut oil (if it is not fractionated), stir in the sugar, grapefruit oil, and grapefruit zest. Transfer to an empty container, jar, bottle etc.
Lavender Linen Spray
2 Tbs of witch hazel or vodka
15-20 drops of lavender essential oil
*Fill the rest of the spray bottle (this recipe makes 4oz.) with distilled water and shake to mix.
Lavender Peppermint Bath Salts
1.5 cups Epsom Salts
10 drops of lavender essential oil
8 drops of peppermint essential oil
2 Tbsp of dried lavender buds
*Combine ingredients in a jar and shake to mix.
Multi Purpose Cleaner
1/2 cup of distilled white vinegar
2 cups of distilled water
2o drops of lemon essential oil
*Combine ingredients in a spray bottle and shake to mix.
My Sister's Incredible Dry Shampoo
1/4 cup of arrowroot powder
5 drops of geranium essential oil
5 drops of rosemary essential oil
*Combine ingredients in a small jar and shake to mix.
I have personally swapped all 5 of these everyday products for these DIY recipes and I am completely in love with all of them. They all smell incredible and work way better then the chemical filled products I used to use. DIY'ing can be confusing at first but once you get the hang of it, its a life changer. Most of the ingredients needed for DIY, are needed for a lot of the recipes not just one (Coconut Oil, Witch Hazel, Epsom Salts, Arrowroot Powder etc.) My advice. Take one Sunday a month and make that your DIY day. Refill your dish soap, cleaning products, etc. and you will be set for another month.
